Special
Track
Perceptually
Enhanced Multimedia Processing, Visualization and Transmission
In the last decade, multimedia content has become more
accessible to users as a result of hardware and communication technology
advancement. Voluminous and computational expensive content, that is otherwise
too costly and time consuming to generate, store, process and transmit, are now
more accessible. However, the increasing demand on more realistic multimedia
content surpasses the availability of resources especially in real-time
transmission and visualization applications. Despite the promises of high speed
networks, latency and interactivity remain an issue when high resolution data
are involved. Consequently,
data reduction continues to be a challenging research topic.
A number of algorithms were proposed in the literature
on data compression and simplification relating to two/three-dimensional, and
time-varying data. However, higher compression ratio often generates higher
data loss. This leads to two research problems: (1) How to obtain an optimal
balance between transmission efficiency and visual quality, and (2) How to
allocate given resources among different multimedia data in order to achieve an
optimal overall visual quality. In this Special Track, we will address these
research problems, and discuss how the perceptual approach can be incorporated
so as to inspire future research on perceptually enhanced multimedia
communication.
Submission of high quality papers describing mature
results or on-going work are invited. Topics for submission include but are not
limited to:
